Part 2-charlie(zhihan zhang)- A superficial honesty

During the Roaring Twenties, social attitudes changed dramatically in 1920s because of World War one, increased wealth and prohibition. In this way, my opinion is that the reason why the American Dream is equal to everyone because I strongly believe that the success always depends on my passion and belief to the dream. Most successful people are rich or famous because they spend their time on what they passion about or they feeling that something is definitely exists in their inner heart. Therefore, everyone is equal because everyone starts at the same point and the success depends on whether you work harder or give up.

In fact, the story can be seen as a tragic love story on the surface, but it’s most commonly understand as a pessimistic critique of the American dream. Nick is one of my favorite character in the novel because he gives me an overall perspective of the lives of those who reach for the American dream, building up an opinion about it. Nick himself is very striving for something because he wants to be tolerant and reliable. The reason I choose Nick because he also has a tough life in the beginning in the novel and this relates to my previous ideas in part one which tells about only if you know what you are seeking for and you will gain what you want in the end. Nick's passion is taken away from others because even he works so hard for his dream and he still looses them in the end. Everything he did is for himself especially when he finds out that money is no longer the most important thing in his life. And this is why when Nick has his own passion about life and he does show his improvements after his faher's warning before he goes in to the society. The only difference is that Nick fights for his dream to make his own fortune. Gatsby and Nick are both dishonest who pretends to be honest to readers because they want to show the positive side of their lifestyle. However, I do think Nick achieves the dream and Gatsby does not. Nick learned that money does not mean success, it only demonstrates an unfilled American Dream. But Gatsby believes that the past can be repeated by buying time which is impossible and contradictory. However, the only thing need to change is that Gatsby needs to realize that the power of wealthy can not get what he wants and he should face the past.

In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I‘ve been turning over in my mind ever since. 'whenever you feel like criticizing anyone,' he told me,'just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had.' The reason I use this quotation to prove my American dream because it establishes Nick as a thoughtful and judgemental character in the novel. Nick tells about his background because he wants to have the trust between the reader. Although some people think that Nick is a liar because he lies many times in the novel. One of the most memoriable thing for him is that he acts as a thoughtful role who gives me a perspective of the lives and life. Therefore, Nick is the only person who can prove my American Dream because he is a outsider of what he seen in Gatsby's story and the reality does show that the American Dream is equal to everyone because the success always depends on your passion and belief to the dream. In my personal view of American Dream, one of the similarity between Gatsby and Nick is the location of their establishment where they are neighborhood. And both of them are hard working people in search of the American Dream. The only difference from anyone else is that Nick acts as a narrator in the novel and he actually is the main character in the story all the time. Gatsby and Nick connects to the American Dream of hard working because they both are looking for more money.

Compare to the media example in part 1 which tells about the reality of American Dream. Both of them mention about that people need to work harder more than others in a competitive society in order to have a better future. Therefore, Nick did it when he goes to the society and he uses his special skills to prove his life quality. When he reaches the peak of passion and the best behaviour that he has ever had in his life and then he achieves his success lastly.
